Club History
Historical notes:
North Wellington AFC was formed in 1972 by the merger of Onslow & Johnson Villa. Onslow were formed in 1934 and based at Nairnville Park, Khandallah. They spent their early years in the lower Wellington grades, concentrating more on the junior side of the club. The Onslow Junior club still exists today. When the merger with Johnson Villa occurred, Onslow wanted to stay in the Wellington Junior competition rather than the Mana junior competition.
The early history of football in Johnsonville is a bit sketchy, the club has a photo of a Johnsonville team in 1908, it appears that there was a club in Johnsonville until the 1920's. In 1954 a group of ex-pat Brits (Aston Villa Fans) formed Johnson Villa.
North Wellington won the Venus shield in 1973 and with it promotion to Central League Division 3, they finished runners-up in 1974 and gained promotion to Division 2.
In 1982 the Men's Premier team finished runners-up in Division 2 and entered Division 1. This year was also significant for the fact that the club supported Ken Dugdale in his bid to get his life ban lifted. He was successful in that he was allowed to coach but the playing ban stayed. After a couple of seasons as assistant-coach to Derek Gibson-Smith, Dugdale took the team himself.
Postscript - Ken Dugdale was coach of the New Zealand soccer team, "the All Whites", from 1998 until his resignation in March 2002. In July 2002 he was appointed coach of New Zealand's only professional soccer team (the Football Kingz, who are based in Auckland) until his resignation in late November 2003.
Local sponsorship from the company Southern Refrigeration supported the club in 1986. After being relegated from Division 1 in 1987 the Men's Premier team spent three seasons in Division 2 before winning the title in the 1990 season and were promoted back to Division 1.
In 1992 North Wellington took over near rivals Newlands-Paparangi United who were in financial strife. The Men's Reserve team won the Venus Shield for winning their grade.
North Wellington have traditionally had a strong representation in Wellington women's competitions and the clubs best season for the women occurred in 1996 when the Premier team won Division 1 and the Kelly Cup (in a penalty shoot-out against Naenae at Naenae Park) and the women's 2nd team won Division 2 and the Executive Plate.
Also in 1996 the Men's Premier team needed to beat Gisborne City in order to secure the second promotion spot to the Central Premier League (Gisborne City required only a draw to secure the second promotion spot). They won 2-1 with Paul Conroy scoring the winner from the penalty spot with seven minutes remaining and were promoted to the Central Premier League for the 1997 season.
The 1997 season saw the Men's Premier team achieve its best-ever performance in New Zealand's Chatham Cup (a knock-out competition which is competed for by most of New Zealand's soccer clubs - similar to the English FA Cup). They reached the quarter-final stage where they lost 3-2 in Auckland to Mount Wellington, a national league team.
In 1998 despite finishing in the relegation zone, the Men's Premier team retained their place in the Central Premier League following the re-organisation of the 1999 League in order to accommodate the North Island league which had included some of the Central Premier League teams.
In 2000 the Men's Premier team finished second-last in the Federation Premier League (the re-named Central Premier League) and were relegated to Federation One. The Women's Premier team finished last of six teams securing their only point in the final game of the season at home against Petone.
Having been relegated to the Federation One grade the Men's Premier team finished eighth of ten teams in the 2001 season. The Women's Premier team improved from the 2000 season in finishing fifth of six teams in the league.
In 2002 the Men's Premier and Women's Premier teams remained in their respective competitions as for the 2001 season. The Federation One grade for the Men's Premier team was renamed Capital One in which they finished sixth of ten teams. They were knocked out in the first round of the Chatham Cup. The Women's Premier team finished fourth of six teams and reached the Kelly Cup final losing 3-1 to Seatoun at Newtown Park.
For 2003 both the Men's Premier and Women's Premier teams retained their place in their respective competitions as for the 2002 season. The Men's team were knocked out in the first round of the Chatham Cup and finished in eighth place of nine teams. For the third successive year the Women's team did not enter the Swanz Cup, a national tournament, and competed in the local Wellington Kelly Cup where they reached the quarter-final stage. In the league they finished sixth of seven teams.
For 2004 both the Men's Premier and Women's Premier teams retained their place in their respective competitions as for the 2003 season. The Men's team finished in fifth place of ten teams in the league and were knocked out of the 1st round of the Chatham Cup by Capital Premier team Lower Hutt City, who reached the semi-finals last year. The Women's team finished in fifth place in their league and reached the final 16 team stage of the nationally contested Swanz Cup before being knocked out by eventual semi-finalists Seatoun.
For 2005 the Men's Premier team returned to the Capital Premier league, with their fifth place the previous season being sufficient to earn promotion following the reorganised Central Premier league (Federation Five - Capital and Federation Four - Central reforming this top league for their teams). In the Chatham Cup they were drawn against the holders Miramar Rangers in the 2nd round, the first occasion that the club have played the holders. In a major upset, one of the memorable matches in the history of this club, they won 3-2 at home on Alex Moore Park.
They lost in the following round to Capital One league side Naenae. In the Capital Premier league they finished in 9th place out of 10 teams. They had to play a promotion/relegation game against the 2nd placed team from Capital One, Western Suburbs (Reserves) on neutral ground, Petone Memorial Park, and lost 2-0. However as Stop Out, winners of the Capital Premier league, won their home and away promotion playoff game against the bottom-placed Red Sox Manawatu, the 2006 Capital Premier league did include the North Wellington club. The Womens Premier team elected not to participate in the reformed Womens Central Premier league and played in the local Capital Premier league finishing in 5th place out of 8 teams. They did not compete in the Swanz Cup.
The 2006 season was the 2nd season in the Capital Premier league for the Men's Premier team. At the conclusion of the 18-game league season they finished in 10th place and were relegated to Capital One for the 2007 season. They lost 9-0, a club record, in the 1st round of the Chatham Cup against higher-ranked Central Premier team Western Suburbs (the eventual Cup winners (0-0 after extra-time, 3-0 on penalties) over Eastern Suburbs (of Auckland)). The Women's Premier team played in Wellington Womens One Division, finishing 5th of the 8 teams, and did not participate in the SWANZ Cup. After losing in the Kelly Cup quarter-final they played in the Executive Plate, losing in a playoff game (prior to the semi-final stage) to Waterside Karori.
In the 2007 season the Men's Premier team competed in the Capital One league following relegation last season, at the conclusion of the 18-game league season they finished in 6th place of the 10 teams. In the Chatham Cup they lost 2-1 in the 1st round to Petone from the higher-ranked Capital Premier league. The Women's Premier team retained their place in the Women's One league in the Wellington region, they finished their 14-game league season in 7th place of the 8 teams. They did not participate in the national Uncle Toby's Swanz Cup. They lost 3-2 in the semi-final of the local Kelly Cup against Miramar Rangers.
In the 2008 season the Men's Premier team competed in the Capital One league which comprised of 10 teams, at the conclusion of the 18-game league season they finished in 3rd place of the 10 teams. In the Chatham Cup they lost to University in the qualifying round. The Women's Premier team played in the Women's Premier league (essentially the re-named Women's One league) following a re-organisation of the Central and Capital Women's football leagues. They did not compete in the Kelly Cup (local) or Swanz Cup (national), however they had an expanded 16-game league season, after 10 games they are in 3rd place.
In the 2009 season the Men's Premier team competed in the Capital One league which comprised of 10 teams, after 13 games they were in 7th place. They defeated Wellington College 2-1 in the qualifying round before losing 3-0 to Tawa in the 1st round of the Chatham Cup. The Women's Premier team play in the Women's Premier league, after 8 games they are in 7th place of the 8 teams. In the Kelly Cup (local) they lost 2-0 to Lower Hutt City in the quarter-finals. In the NZ Football knockout (Swanz national) Cup they did not participate.
