Obituary (April 2008) - Beverley Smith (nee Shugg), former player of the Womens Division 3 team. Recipient of the Jack Thomson Memorial Cup (for Sports Person / Committee Member) in 1979, when aged 19.
Beverley died of breast cancer in Auckland on 7 April 2008 - aged 47 years. The funeral in Auckland was attended by club members Therese Lloyd, Rebecca Roche & Lisa Chafe.

(The following words were spoken by Grant Shields, club life member, on behalf of the Womens Division 3 team
On 7th April this year, we lost one of our founding women’s club members to secondary breast cancer, at the age of 47.
Bev Smith (nee Shugg) was 14 years old when she, along with her sister Janice, friends Jacqui and Alice Dolan and their mum Rose, and former womens’ international, Maureen Jacobson were among the founding members of the first women’s team in this club, then known as Johnsonvilla. That was in 1975 and Bev’s association with the club was very strong, with her involvement in coaching several junior teams and being on the then Management Committee of the Junior Club as well as helping produce the senior club’s match programme for a couple of seasons.
Bev played in the first team for four seasons before moving to Mana Football Club where she was selected for the Wellington U18 rep squad.
In 2005 Bev had returned to Wellington and she got talked into playing for the Women’s 3rd team after an absence of almost 20 years and soon found out she still enjoyed it as much as the good old days. In one of her first games back however, she took a ball in the chest and when it was still giving her some pain after a couple of weeks, she decided to get it checked out. The resulting tests found that Bev had a lump in her breast that wouldn’t have been detected as soon as it was, if she hadn’t been hurt. At first she (and everyone else) thought it had been caught early enough to guarantee a full recovery. Sadly, this was not the case and, after a brave fight Bev passed away in Auckland, where she had moved back with husband David and kids Cameron and Michelle in 2007.
Tonight we acknowledge Bev’s contribution to the history of North Wellington and to say that she inspired us all with her spirit and determination.

A presentation was made by the Club Chairman, Warwick Smith, on the following issues:

2008 Club & Team achievements:
2008 Committee:

All club members urged to attend.

'State of Origin' presentation - Social club game was played on Saturday 6th September 2008 at Alex Moore Park with the shield donated by the event founder (ex-club member Craig Hopkins, Mens Premier team coach - 2005 season) presented to the winning captain Leigh Clements (Mens Capital 9 Victory team) from 'Country' team.

2008 - The Clubrooms were partially decorated for the function (again the Committee appreciated the work done by club member Gavin Underhill for his assistance). Tickets were $15 per person. Teams to win a bottle of bubbly (drawn from teams present) were Masters 1 & Masters 3 Vindaloos.
The dress theme for the function was teams to dress in their own 'team theme' (e.g. 'Phoenix', 'All Blacks') (2007 - 'Loud & Proud Shirts/Dress').
A Powerpoint presentation of the award winners was done (thanks to Phil & Jo Sale).
Attendance during the evening was 134 (143 in 2007) people.
